Eight models added to 2003 Johnson outboard line; two-stroke power options range from 3.5 to 175-horsepower, while four-stroke power spans 4 to 140 horsepower range
Bombardier Recreational Products has announced the expansion of the 2003 Johnson® outboard engine line to include more horsepower options and models, including four new two stroke and four new four-stroke outboard engines. With two-stroke models from 3.5 to 175-horsepower, and four-stroke models from 4 to 140-horsepower, the 2003 Johnson outboard line-up continues the tradition of durability and reliability that Johnson outboard engines have been delivering for more than 80 years.
'For 2003, we have expanded the Johnson outboard engine line to include more power options to meet the growing demands of boaters in virtually every segment of the marine marketplace,' said Roch Lambert, Vice President and General Manager, Boats and Outboard Engines Division. 'From the quiet, smooth performance of a four-stroke to the outstanding performance of big horsepower two-stroke technology, Bombardier outboard engines meet the quality and performance expectations of the industry's most demanding boaters.'
According to Lambert, a rigorous testing program also ensures that Johnson outboard engines are capable of delivering the durability and reliable performance in the harshest marine environments.
'We test every part and every system of every Johnson outboard engine, from gears and pistons to the electronics that manage the engine operating systems, to ensure the product coming off the line lives up to the Johnson outboard heritage of toughness and dependability,' Lambert said.
Bombardier Recreational Products designs, develops, builds, distributes and markets utility vehicles, Rotax® engines, Ski Doo® and Lynx® snowmobiles, Bombardier® ATVs, Sea-Doo® watercraft and sport boats, Bombardier Fish Hawk™ fishing boats as well as Evinrude® and Johnson® outboard marine engines and Ficht® direct fuel injection technology.

Johnson 140 4 Stroke Reviews

The Johnson Advantage
JOHNSON TWO-STROKE OUTBOARD ENGINES OFFER POWER, PERFORMANCE AND PORTABILITY
The Johnson® two-stroke outboard engines include 12 models to meet the needs of a broad range of boating lifestyles.
In the V-6 category:
The largest horsepower two-stroke options include 60-degree V-6s in 175- and 150-horsepower models. Available in both 25-inch (635 mm) and 20-inch (508 mm) shaft lengths for saltwater and freshwater boating applications, these engines are designed to provide the power and performance to deliver the on water experience recreational power boaters demand.
Both models feature a streamlined gearcase equipped with larger, more durable matched gear sets and stronger propshaft and driveshaft assemblies for enhanced durability.
The gearcase has superior hydrodynamics that provide greater top-end speed, as well as better handling and maneuverability through turns.
Both V-6s are also equipped with Top Charge™ 35-amp alternators with voltage regulators to provide plenty of electrical power for on-board accessories, even at slower cruising speeds.
In the V-4 category:
The V-4s in the Johnson line include 115- and 90-horsepower models that are a popular choice of power for family runabouts, sport and fishing boats.
These outboard engines feature a power-to-weight ratio that offers maximum horsepower in a compact, lightweight package. The 115-horsepower V-4 is available in 25- and 20-inch shaft lengths, while the 90-horsepower model has a 20-inch shaft.
The two-cylinder, two-stroke 50- and 40-horsepower engines are a favorite choice for family cruisers, runabouts and inland lake fishing applications. The 50-horsepower model is equipped with a 20-inch shaft, while the 40 horsepower engine is available in either 20- or 15-inch (381 mm) shafts and with either remote or tiller steering.
The two-cylinder compacts in the two-stroke Johnson outboard line include the 30- and 25-horsepower models. These engines, perfect for smaller runabouts and utility boats, are available in either 20- or 15-inch shaft lengths; remote or tiller throttle and steering; and electric or rope starting.
All V-4s and V-6s are equipped with the Johnson exclusive OIS™ 2000 optical ignition system for fast, sure starts and the unique PowerPath™ induction system for torque boosting acceleration and on-plane performance.
Additionally, all models feature the FasTrak™ power trim and tilt system for faster and more precise trim action.
They also feature DeepGuard™ corrosion protection, sacrificial anodes, stainless steel parts and electro-deposition paint to resist the most corrosive marine environments.
All V-6 and V-4 models also are available in either white or graphite color schemes to match the more popular boat packages.
Boaters looking for power and lightweight portability will find the newest additions to the Johnson two-stroke outboard line quite impressive. Four outboard engines have been added to the Johnson outboard line for 2003 - 15-, 9.9-, 8- and 6-horsepower models. Johnson portables are a perfect fit for utility boats, inflatables or dinghies. All portables feature a center-mounted tiller steering arm, which provides added control and maneuverability while under way. Remote steering is available as an accessory for the 15- and 9.9 horsepower models.
Johnson outboard engines are protected by the Super S.L.O.W.™ warning system. This electronic sentinel sounds a warning and automatically and gradually reduces engine speed to a safe level if it detects overheating or other conditions that could damage the engine.
For added protection, Bombardier also backs all Johnson two-stroke outboard engines with an industry-leading two-year, non-declining, limited, warranty (for recreational use). (Warranty for government, commercial, promotional and international engines may vary. See an authorized dealer or distributor for details.)
JOHNSON ADDS NEW FOUR-STROKE MODELS TO EXPAND HORSEPOWER RANGE
The top of the Johnson four-stroke line-up features three new models, including 140-, 115- and 90-horsepower outboard engines.
These four-cylinder, in-line engines feature:
- dual overhead cams
- 16 valves
- These translate to impressive power and peak top-end speeds.
- Digital sequential multi-port fuel injection also provides faster acceleration and on-plane time.
- Each model features a 40-amp alternator that provides the electrical output to power today's more popular accessories and electronics.
- All three models also are equipped with either 25- or 20-inch shaft lengths, power trim and tilt, and a solid-state ignition system.
MID-RANGE
Four mid-range outboard engines are offered in the Johnson four-stroke outboard line for 2003, including 70-, 60-, 50- and 40-horsepower models.
The Johnson 70- and 60-horsepower models:
- feature an eight-valve, four-cylinder, in-line, single overhead cam powerhead that provides the muscle needed to get boats on plane quickly.
- are equipped with a 21.5-amp alternator, which provides enough output to power electronics - even at slow cruising speeds.
The 50- and 40-horsepower models feature a 12-valve, three-cylinder, in-line, dual overhead cam powerplant that delivers smooth, powerful performance from a smaller package.
FOUR-STROKE PORTABLES
Johnson will also offer two four-stroke portables, including the 15- and 9.9 horsepower models, which are based on a two-cylinder, in-line, single overhead cam engine designed to optimize power and torque when boaters need it most.
Aluminum connecting rods also provide crisp throttle response and faster acceleration.
Both models are available with either rope or electric start and feature compression reduced starting for easier starts.
Tiller steering is standard on both the 20- and 15-inch shaft length models.
At the ultra-light end of the Johnson four-stroke model line are the 8-, 6- and 4-horsepower models, which are easily carried and easy to install or remove from a boat.
The 8-horsepower Johnson features a large displacement, two-cylinder, single overhead cam engine.
The 6-horsepower model is based on a single-cylinder, single overhead cam powerplant.
Both models are rope-start, tiller-controlled engines available in 20- and 15 inch shaft lengths.
The 4-horsepower four-stroke model is the newest addition to the Johnson portable line.
- It features a large displacement (up to 19 percent more than competitive engines), single-cylinder, single overhead cam engine that offers plenty of power and torque to get an inflatable quickly on plane.
- A forward mounted steering arm and 180-degree steering add flexibility and increased maneuverability in tight quarters.
- A six-amp alternator is standard on this model, which is the highest output alternator in this class.
- This model also features an on-board 1.5-liter fuel tank for longer range and fewer fill-ups.
All Johnson four-strokes are offered with a white paint scheme and are backed by one of the marine industry's most comprehensive warranties, a Bombardier three-year, non-declining, limited warranty (for recreational use), which provides shroud-to-prop-nut warranty coverage for added peace of mind. (Warranty for government, commercial, promotional and international engines may vary. See authorized dealer or distributor for details.)
